Chances are, you have experienced pain at some point in your life. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 51.6 million adults in the United States, or 20.9% of the population, experienced chronic pain in 2021.. There are two types of pain: acute and chronic. Acute pain is felt quickly and then leaves after time has passed. Chronic pain is constant and can vary greatly in its severity. Pain is often experienced as a tingling, sharp, burning, stinging, prickling sensation or ache within the body. Per the 2011 Institute of Medicine (now National Academy of Medicine) report, “Relieving Pain in America,” over 100 million adults in the U.S. suffer from chronic pain, of which 8 million report pain severe enough to interfere with daily living.
